HOW TO STAY MOTIVATED TO EXERCISE DURING WINTER

They say summer bodies are made in winter, but we can’t deny it feels much more difficult to train throughout the colder months. When it’s freezing cold and wet, the last thing you want to do is go for a run outside or drive to the gym. Surely, we’d all much prefer to stay cuddled up in bed, next to a warm heater, eating excessively. We’re all guilty of stacking on those few extra winter kilos at some point in our lives, then summertime fast approaches and we feel an instant regret… “oh well maybe next winter”. But not this year! We want you to stay motivated and reach your fitness goals! Read our top tips on how to stay motivated to exercise during winter.

SET YOURSELF GOALS

Goal setting is so important in life and especially when exercising. This means you have something to work towards and can implement other little goals to get you to your main goal. Whether it be to lose ten kilograms, simply tone up or maybe you want to build your strength, have a good think about what you want to achieve by exercising. Set yourself a timeframe and aim to achieve the goal within the time period. You’ll feel so proud of yourself when you have put in the hard yards and actually reached your goal!

CREATE A SCHEDULE

Creating a schedule to follow daily will assist you greatly with your fitness goals.  Try to dedicate an hour each day to exercise, whether you have two early morning starts each week to smash out your workout before the working day, and three night sessions for after work. Create a schedule which compliments your lifestyle and still leaves you time to do the things you need to and to also have relaxation time.

TRAIN INDOORS

Since the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of gyms, we were forced to get creative as we thought of new ways to exercise. What this has left most of us with is an abundance of workout equipment to train at home with. Make use of it! Even though gyms are slowly re-opening, sometimes the last thing you want to be doing is heading out into the cold to exercise. Take the initiative to do your home workouts from the comfort of your warm and cosy home.

FIND A WORKOUT BUDDY

Having a workout buddy is one of the best ways to keep you motivated and on track with your fitness goals. Having a friend to train with provides you with a level of support and you can help each other stay focused. It makes working out fun and adds some competition to the dynamic which can further motivate you to train harder.  You can also have a designated driver each week so there’s no excuses so if you don’t put in the effort, you’re not just letting yourself down, you’re letting your mate down too.

FOLLOW MOTIVATING FITNESS INFLUENCERS OR BLOGS

Following inspiring fitness influencers on their social media accounts is a great way to gain motivation to exercise. Sometimes seeing influencers share their workouts or watching them prepare healthy meals or even seeing amazing progress shots can be all the motivation you need to get to the gym. It’s a reminder of your own goals and shows you how other people have achieved success, regardless of their busy schedules. You can always gain some useful tips to incorporate into your own path to success. Michelle Lewin, Kayla Itsines and Emily Skye are a few great fitness bloggers you can gain useful fitness tips from.

BUY NEW GYM OUTFITS

Something about having fresh gym outfits makes working out so much more exciting! Having new activewear makes you feel great and gives you another reason to train. When you feel confident, you’ll want to keep pushing yourself to improve and sometimes just having some new activewear additions to your wardrobe is all you need to get yourself back in action.
