5 WAYS TO NATURALLY BOOST ENERGY BEFORE A WORKOUT

Finding the motivation to exercise can be a difficult task especially when you are lacking energy. After a long day of work, you might find yourself physically and emotionally drained. Sometimes the last thing on your mind is putting on your gym gear and working out. We’ve all been there and especially during the colder seasons, there’s just another reason we simply don’t want to work out. Pre-workouts and caffeine drinks do work for some of us; however, some can be quite dangerous to consume if not taken correctly and can sometimes cause more harm than good. But pre-workouts and high caffeinated drinks aside, there are alternative ways to boost your energy before a workout, naturally. By following these 5 tips, you can give your body the energy boost it needs in order to maximise your workout potential.

  1. Nutrition is key

Your diet plays a major role in how your body operates. If you continuously eat junk food, with high levels of sugar and fat, your body will pay for it. Even if you have a fast metabolism, the foods you consume can impact the way your body functions. It’s important to fuel your body with fresh, wholesome foods, in order to maintain good energy levels. Balance in life is very important, it’s not to say you can’t eat a bar of chocolate here or there, but you need to be eating more of the good stuff. By eating a proper pre-workout meal, your body will be provided with the essential micro and macro nutrients it needs to smash through your workouts. Foods like bananas, boiled egg whites, oatmeal and blueberries are all great snacks to have prior to working out which give the body a natural energy boost.

  1. Stay hydrated

The human body is made up of almost 60% of water and without the consumption of water, our bodies wouldn’t be able to survive. So, it makes sense to consume more water than anything else, but yet most of us are not drinking enough! As an adult, we should be consuming at least 8 glasses of water per day, which equates to about 2 litres. Insufficient consumption of water leads to dehydration and dehydration leads to fatigue. If you’re drinking enough water throughout the day, you should feel energised and ready to tackle your next workout.

  1. Practice deep breathing

Another way to increase your energy levels, which might not seem as obvious, is to practice correctly breathing. Simple breathing exercises are in fact one of the best natural energy boosts we can do. Your breathing can actually impact you in a number of aspects in your life including, your focus levels, productivity, mental clarity and your immune system function. By breathing correctly (deeper, slower breaths) you are bringing a greater amount of oxygen into your body, leading to lower blood pressure, a slower heart rate, an improvement in circulation and more importantly, MORE ENERGY!

  1. Implement a good sleeping pattern

Sleep is so incredibly important in order for our bodies to effectively function! Most of us are guilty of sometimes depriving ourselves of sleep, whether it be due to work commitments, stress or whatever reason, most of us simply don’t get enough sleep. However not getting an adequate amount of sleep each night can impact our energy levels and how we function throughout the day. By ensuring you have at least 7-8 hours of sleep per day, you will feel more focused, energised and will be more likely to train harder.

  1. Take multivitamins

Vitamins are a great way to increase your energy levels naturally. Any multivitamin containing vitamin B12 would be ideal as it helps to support energy, leaving you feeling less fatigued. Vitamin A is also beneficial to consume prior to working out as it assists with the preventing muscle breakdowns throughout a workout. Most multivitamins do a great job at covering all the bases in terms of what your body needs. So, for a natural energy boost, prior to your workout session, start taking multivitamins daily.

Whether you’re a professional athlete, or an amateur gym junkie, some of us prefer a more natural alternative to a pre-workout boost. And let’s face it, some days we need some sort of pick me up, to really have us putting in 100% when we exercise. If you aren’t a fan of energy supplements of pre-workout formulas, give these tips a try and you’ll be feeling less fatigued and more motivated to smash out a workout.
